More About Mold Damage
Molds are part of a group of micro-organisms called fungi that also includes mushrooms and yeasts. Molds are familiar to most people as food spoilers on items such as bread or fruit. Molds are nature’s decomposers in the food chain.
Since Mold is a natural occurring organism and it has been around for a long time, how can this useful, natural, important substance create such hysteria? The truth is that mold has been around since the earth was created and has posed some concern for homeowners since biblical times. In fact the first mold remediation plan was written in the bible in the book of Leviticus.
If this is true why all of the sudden has this become a critical health issue just in the last few years? The answer is energy efficiency.
Homes are being built to very high energy standards now and do not allow the free flow of air and moisture through the building materials like the homes of past decades. When moisture gets trapped in these structures the water, organic material, and mold spores create a wonderful breeding ground. The recipe for mold growth is water, organic material, and spores. All homes are built with some organic materials, wood, paper, adhesives, latex paint and mold spores are everywhere in the air. The only ingredient missing is the water and time. So, when any water intrudes on our new energy efficient homes and can not escape or evaporate the water just completes our mold triangle.
Mold when growing creates more spores and these spores carry mycotoxins in them to insure the molds life. The mycotoxins are the chemicals in the mold issue that creates most of the health issues. Health and mold related diseases and liabilities are the reasons for all of the hype and mold cleaning and remediation procedures. If you are one of the unlucky one’s to have mold growing on a wall or in a wall or some other structure in your house, do not panic the problem can be solved and your house can be restored.
When approaching the solution to a mold contamination issue a home or business owner must use some caution to avoid liability. Tenant, renters, employees, and guests all could create a liability issue for any property owner and it is important that you know what to do and who to call when a mold issue comes up. First, make sure that who you are working with is a certified Mold Remediation Contractor or Hygienist or Environmental Professional. There are several organizations that can help in finding and determining the expertise of your contractor or testing agent.
IICRC , Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration
ASCR, American Society of Cleaning and Restoration
IAQA, International Air Quality Association
These are just a few of the training and certification organizations to look to for help. (See our links section)
DRT is certified through all of these organizations to help prepare a remediation plan and execute that plan to bring your property back to healthy condition. DRT uses practical and efficient processes to clean your facility and protect you and those that are affected by the contamination. DRT’s trained and certified staff of remediation technicians knows how to get contaminated properties back to where the occupants can safely resume normal lives. The restoration industry uses several industry standards to guide the way that mold is remediated. These standards provide some continuity for the victims of mold infestation, to insure that they are protected from those that are alarmists and those that would not take the situation serious enough. These standards are on our list of documents and are followed by DRT as the guideline to our remediation projects. The goal of almost every mold remediation project is to remove the contaminants and get the buildings air quality to be equal to or better than the outdoor air. This means we want the spore particles in the indoor environment to be less than that of the outdoor environment. When this happens the property owner knows that the property is clean. DRT will always work with property owners to document the procedure helping owners recover any money available to cover this type of loss. The insurance industry is not always covering these losses 100%, not all of the repairs are eligible for reimbursement, however since this is now a “grey area” in coverage’s the documentation process is that much more important.
Mold contamination is not an easy issue to deal with. If you have a property that is struggling with this type of contamination call the experts! Call DRT!
Remember “When disaster strikes DRT responds!”
